NEW buildings in Mandaue City will be required to implement the green infrastructure ordinance, which was passed on final reading and approved by the mayor last week.
The ordinance sponsored by Mandaue City Councilor Ernie Manatad will require building owners to construct structures using environment-friendly methods and use resources that would be least disruptive to the environment.
This includes maximizing sunlight as a natural source of energy and using ambient air for natural ventilation.
Mandaue City public information officer Roger Paller said that this method not only saves the residents’ money but also creates a healthy environment.
The city government will expect more new commercial and residential buildings to comply with the ordinance. Violators will be fined P5,000.
Government agencies in the city government have been implementing energy saving measures like opening the windows instead of using air conditioners.
These environment-friendly measures earned for Mandaue the low-carbon model town project of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
