City to release delayed games managers’ honoraria

THE Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Office will finally give the much-needed honoraria for tournament managers and officials of the Cebu City Olympics.

This was supposed to be given last year during the 24th edition of the annual city meet.

Esther Cobero, consultant of the Office of the Mayor, said the honorarium will be released within the week.

“It’s now being processed and hopefully it will be released within the week,” Obero said during yesterday’s official launching of the silver anniversary of the Cebu City Olympics at the DepEd Cebu City office in Imus Road. Also present was Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.

“The main reason of this problem is that the contract signed by DepEd for the release of the honorarium of the tournament managers and officials was not signed nor accepted by the city attorney.

That’s why the budget was not approved and the approval was clogged for a long time. That’s why I stepped in to volunteer and help out because I know how it feels to sacrifice without anything in return.”

The development, thus, resolved the long-standing issue that would have affected the 25th edition of the meet tomorrow at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

This is the first time the meet encountered a problem involving money.

DepEd Cebu City Sports Coordinator Zenaida Gocotano appealed to the tournament managers and officials to remain steadfast and unfaltering in the pursuit of their functions despite the problem they encountered.

Gocatano and Obero told the present tournament managers and officials that the honorarium for the 2015 edition will be released on time.

Meanwhile, in today’s opening ceremonies, some of Cebu City’s former athletes who are now successful in their chosen  fields  will be given recognition as part of the highlights of the silver anniversary of the meet.

Action starts tomorrow featuring nine districts and the top three Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) schools.

The University of San Carlos-Basic Education (USC-BED) retained the overall title last year.

The winning teams and athletes in this meet will man Team Cebu City Niños in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) in February 2016 in the City of Naga, south Cebu.
