USJ-R girls volleybelles loses to National University in Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League

The girls high school spikers of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) tumbled out of contention for the national crown as they got blasted by National University (NU) in straight sets, 16-25, 17-25, in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League Season 13 national finals at the Astrodome yesterday.

With one loss already across their name, the Cebu champions put up a good fight but just could not overcome the might of their National Capital Region counterparts who were hungry for a win after getting edged by Southern Luzon’s La Salle-Lipa on Tuesday, 22-25, 25-23, 30-32.

USJ-R, though, was still going all out for redemption as it was still taking on Northern Mindanao representatives, Angelicum Learning Center, in its final game of the elimination round. That match was still being played in as of this writing.

La Salle-Lipa and NU have now booked themselves spots in the semifinals after coming away with the top two records in Pool B.

Defending champion Western Visayas and Southern Mindanao took the two semis slots in the Pool A with a sweep of their first two games in the event.

Western Visayas, represented by Central Philippine University headed by Princess Robles, Julie Ann Robles and Claudine Troncoso, dominated Eastern Visayas, 25-18, 25-17, while Southern Mindanao, led by Lycha Ebon and Georgie Loreto, thwarted Northern Luzon, 25-18, 25-22. EV and NL bowed out of the race with 0-2 cards.

Meanwhile, Western Visayas and Southern Mindanao, represented by Davao City National High School, were disputing the top spot in Pool A at presstime with the winner taking on the No. 2 team in Pool B and the loser facing Pool B topnotcher Southern Luzon in today’s crossover semis.

The Final Four is set at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. with the finals to start at 4 p.m., also today.
