Treasurer sued for missing funds

The barangay treasurer of Manduyong, Badian town in south Cebu is facing trial for allegedly misappropriating P328,293.84 in government funds four years ago.

The Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas indicted  Apolinaria Ferrolino for  malversation of public funds.

In 2011, Ferrolino was found to have lost a total of P328,293.84 in government funds.

She was ordered by the Commission on Audit (COA) to produce the missing funds under her accounts.

Ferrolino later wrote the state auditor and admitted that she had misappropriated the funds.

Since she could not afford to return the money  in full, she promised to pay the amount of not less than P2,000 every month.

Ferrolino had paid a total of P33,200 since October 2011. However, in November 2013, she still had an unliquidated and unremitted collection of P295,093.84.

The anti-graft office directed the respondent to file her counter-affidavit but she failed to comply.

This was taken as a  waiver of her right to present  countervailing evidence, said graft investigation and prosecution officer Eileen Mae Lagat-Alde.
