Team Cebu City’s kickboxers harvested five gold medals together with five silvers and four bronze medals in Muay Thai competition in the recent 2015 Philippine National Games Visayas leg held in San Jose, Antique last week.
A combination of amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and kickboxers who are products of the Cebu City Sports Commission’s combat grassroots program helped Team Cebu City accomplish the impressive feat.
“I was contented with the result and proud of the team,” said Team Cebu City Muay Thai head coach Mary Ann Durado. “They showed great skills even if most of them were first timers in Muay Thai.”
University of San Carlos (USC) Rhyle Lugo led the golden assault as he went undefeated in the junior combat tournament.
Other Team Cebu fighters who contributed golds were Southwestern University’s (SWU) Freska Tejam in the girls class, Diosdado Booc and University of Cebu’s (UC) Janred Calinao, who snared golds in the combat and Wai Khru (dance) events.
Fil-Japanese Yugie Inaba of UC also bagged double silvers in the juniors class, while Roel Rosauro, Julius Muana, Roy Bajar added silver medals each for Team Cebu City.
The bronze were contributed by UC’s Jedial Alvarez and University of the Visayas’ (UV) Lymil Villacrusis, Aljun Pepito and Michael Gabriel Tranquena.
