2 workers fall from Capitol church ceiling

Two construction workers were injured after they fell  from a 40-foot high scaffolding used in the construction of the extension of the Our Lady of Sacred Heart Parish church on Escario St. in Barangay Camputhaw, Cebu City shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday.

The victims identified as Junjie Cañete and Mark Gil Gerodia were rushed to Perpetual Succour Hospital for possible broken bones and limbs.

Egard Martinez, a fellow worker of Vineyard Construction, told reporters that they were in another designated area when they heard a loud thud and saw the victims already slumped on the ground.

Reynaldo Perez, the security guard of the area, said that the victims were working on the ceiling when the wooden beam where the workers attached their safety belt broke.

The Department of Labor and Employment Central Visayas (DOLE-7) sent labor laws compliance officers Primo Guarin and Rustico Levi to inspect the area.

They said they will call the contractor to check if they have the necessary licenses and if they have complied with the safety rules.

Levi said that he will also ask the construction company to give assistance to the victims.

Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Villarojo said that they already visited Cañete and Gerodia at the hospital. The two construction workers are already in a stable condition but still need prayers.

He said that the church is willing to help them.
