Defending champion Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-Adc) struck hard in its favorite track and field events yesterday to take a commanding lead after the first day of the Mandaue City Division Meet which the Magis Eagles are hosting at its Canduman, Mandaue City campus.
The Magis Eagles harvested 10 gold medals in athletics along with three silvers and three bronze medals while Labogon National High School (LNHS) was a distant second with two golds, four silvers and seven bronze medals.
Sacred Heart’s secondary girls athletics squad headed by Britney Moira Cañete snatched seven gold medals while its boys team collected three gilts.
Cañete dominated the 200m run and 100m hurdles while teammates Catherine Dale Mayol earned a gold medal in the 400m run, Catherine Angeli Yu topped the 1500m run, Pearl Angelie Abellar ruled in the 400m hurdles, Carmela Dublin soared in girls high jump while Cynail Siasoyco was unchallenged in shot put.
Harvesting gold medals for the Magis Eagles boys squad were Enrico Avila, who hauled two gold medals by topping the 200m run and 400m hurdles and multi-titled junior triathlete Yuan Chiongbian who lorded the 5,000m run.
LNHS’ gold medal winners were Carl Mark Cotejo who topped the secondary boys’ shot put and Gabriel Tura who won gold in the 110m hurdles.
Other opening day gold medal winners yesterday include Mandaue City School for the Arts’ Serge Pepito for boys high jump, University of Visayas (UV) Mandaue’s Francis Kyle Policarpio for the 400m hurdles and Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School’s Jacob Nudalo for the 1500m run.
The remaining events to be competed today will be the relays, triple jump, the 100m and 800m races.
