Stock up on masks, LGUs told

The provincial government’s disaster office called on local government units to stock up on masks in case ashfall from Mount Kanlaon in Negros Oriental reaches Cebu.

The Capitol’s disaster management risk reduction chief Baltazar Tribunalo Jr. said while smoke and ashfall from the mountain is unlikely to reach Cebu, they should not be complacent.

“They should prepare masks, if they have any. Nothing is happening yet, but it’s best to stock up on these,” he told reporters earlier.

Tribunalo said the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has been sending advisories to six LGUs in the midwest parallel to the volcano located in central Negros Oriental.

These are Tuburan, Asturias, Balamban, Toledo City, Pinamungajan, and Aloguinsan. The disaster chief is also recommending the use of shirts or pieces of cloth to substitute for masks.

He also urged LGUs to continue monitoring daily advisories from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Tribunalo said since the direction of the wind is going southwest, Cebu will be spared from smoke and ash.
