THE boy who got his left foot stuck in an escalator at SM City Cebu Northwing is recuperating in a private hospital.
Criminal defense lawyer Virgilio Toribio, grandfather of the eight-year-old boy, said the child is still confined in the hospital and is being given antibiotics for his injury.
He hoped that the boy, who is in Grade 3, would be allowed to go home by Tuesday so he won’t miss his classes.
Toribio said he was at the atrium listening to a performance when the accident happened last Saturday night while the boy and his grandmother were descending toward the atrium. (Read : Boy rescued after foot gets stuck in escalator )
Toribio noted that the escalator automatically stopped right after his grandchild’s foot was stuck at the base.
Some mall goers, who saw the boy struggling to extricate his foot from the escalator, immediately grabbed the railings to prevent the escalator from moving further and consuming the boy’s foot.
Panels of black cloth were quickly draped at the base of the escalator while technicians and mall personnel tried to extricate the boy’s foot. A crowd gathered as the rescue took nearly an hour.
Toribio said he was satisfied with how the mall employees swiftly responded to the situation. The mall management has also promised to foot the hospital bill.
