SEVERAL non-government organizations questioned the relocation site for settlers displaced by the demolition of homes in barangay Carreta, Cebu City.
“Ang nahitabo man gud nga ang kanang barangay Carreta gi-demolish sila pero ang gibarogan nila karon sa siyudad, naa gihapon sa bakilid (What happened in barangay Carreta is that the relocation site is located in a slope),” said Renel Oliva, representative of the Fellowship for Organizing Endeavors Inc. (Forge).
Oliva said the relocation site is landslide prone. Alvin Santillana, head of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, said the relocation site was previously purchased.
“The council will look into the titles and plans but they don’t know about the slopes and how dangerous it is,” he said.
He said the lots in Cebu City are 20 percent flat and 80 percent sloped. Santillana said flat lots are expensive.
“The settlers don’t like the purchased relocation sites in the city. They want to stay near the demolished areas and they want to look for available lots for rent or for sale,” he said. Santillana said only sloped lots are available.
He said the non-government organizations (NGOs) should attend their meetings to help them assess what needs to be done to solve the problem.
