It’s been four days (in Philippine time) since the historic upset in the Miss Universe 2015 pageant.
We’re still basking in the victory.
The hustle and bustle of Christmas eve preparations goes hand in hand with the surreal turn of events that materialized the dream of Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
A pageant is a test of beauty under pressure, and Pia showed the grace and statesmanship befitting a Miss Universe.
Even if she didn’t have her victory walk and her win was clouded with a colossal on-air mistake by veteran American TV host Steve Harvey, her victory will be remembered in the best possible light because of Pia’s handling of the mix-up.
She kept her poise, showed her vulnerability, and had the presence of mind to assure everyone that the situation was well in hand.
She apologized on behalf of the organization that inadvertently handed her the most embarrassing fix, and convinced the public with her sincerity.
After a 42 year gap for another Filipina to wear the crown, Pia made the wait worthwhile.
She follows in the proud tradition of the ageless Gloria Diaz and the elegant Margie Moran, who did not rely on their good looks after the pageant, and remain admirable examples of womanhood.
Determination is Pia’s second name. It was her third attempt to win the Miss Universe title despite constant teasing by well-meaning family and friends that maybe it was time for her to give up the dream.
From her journey, we have a lot to learn about perseverance and being focused on a goal.
The country has much to thank Pia for perking up morale after the sapping disappointment over People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao’s loss to American champion Floyd Mayweather. Babawi tayo.
It’s particularly satisfying to know the Fil-German beauty has not forgotten her Bisaya roots or her childhood days in Cagayan de Oro.
Soon after the pageant, a brief video shout out was released with Pia reminding friends in Cagayan de Oro she was coming home for an event. And she invited them all in Bisaya.
What a wonderful Christmas present for the country, after being saddled with national problems like the devastation of typhoons Nona and Onyok and the international flak over the “tanim bala’ racket in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
This is just what we need – the “confidently beautiful” Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach reminding the world why the Philippines produces winners.
