Student journalists from Paknaan Elementary School (PES) bested 31 other teams from both the public and private schools in Mandaue during the recent Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC).
For three straight years, PES has bagged journalism awards and recognitions in group and individual categories.
The three-peat champion brought home 14 awards in the individual category and two first place recognitions in the group category of radio broadcasting competition, both in Filipino and English.
Merasol G. Marzado, school paper adviser for Filipino, attributed the victory to the training of the students.
The school’s ‘one coach per student’ strategy was seen as the vital factor that honed the skills of the participants.
“The cooperation and the great help from Mr. Alvin Vestil and the administration led by our ever-supportive principal Flora Ylanan contributed a lot,” said Joylen Vale, one of the coaches.
DSPC is a three-phase competition with the division level as its initial stage. Winners will compete in the regional level and then the national level.
The annual competition is spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd) in line with its pursuit to “demonstrate understanding on the importance of journalism by expressing it through different journalistic endeavours and approaches.” /USJ-R AB LIACOM Intern Jellmar F. Cabrera
