AFTER emerging victorious in the recently-concluded Cebu Country Club Junior Open Championship, Weiwei Gao sets his sights on the big prize today as he competes against the country’s best up-and-coming golfers in the Philippine Amateur (Stroke Play) Open Golf Championship at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.
Gao, a student of the Center for International Education British School-Cebu and an ace of the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, will be coming into this competition with his morale and confidence pumped up after winning the Class A division and the Juniors Boys division titles in the tournament that was held last week at the lush greens of CCC in Banilad.
However, Gao will be up against some tough competition led by Jobim Carlos who is out to cap a remarkable amateur career with another major title.
Carlos beat Rupert Zaragosa by three in last year’s staging of the annual event organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines also at the wind-raked Aoki course.
Carlos is wary of the field’s depth and the par-72 layout’s challenge, especially the course’s windy conditions, stressing the need to dish out his best if he were to emerge victorious again in the 72-hole championship, the kickoff leg of this year’s PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour.
