Cebuano netters make next round in Peugeot tennis

Cebuano netter Jan Godfrey Seno led the Cebuano charge yesterday as he pulled off a huge victory, crushing Zamboanga Peninsula’s phenom Jose Maria Pague, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of the Peugeot Philippine Tennis Open (PPTO) regional qualifiers at the Cebu Country Club tennis courts.

The 14-year old Jose Maria Pague put up a great fight against Seno but the Cebuano, backed by a home crowd, did not blink and chalk up the victory to move into the third round.

Seno will battle the winner between Mark Ang and Alvin Labastida in the third round today.

Aside from Seno, several other Cebuano netters moved into the next phase.

Israel Abarquez annihilated Venz Alforque, 6-3, 6-3, to set up a duel with compatriot Mike Evani Bienes, who survived Royen Cabunillas 6-3, 6-2.

University of the Visayas product Norman Joseph Enriquez took care of business by blasting Raymund Sambas, 6-2, 6-3 to advance.

Also putting up great performances were Marc Nicole Suson and Franklin Encarnacion, who overpowered fellow Cebuano Clyde Bienes, 7-6, 6-3, and Marc Pradel, 6-2, 6-2, respectively.

The 15-year-old Suson, however, will face an acid test as he is set to go toe-to-toe with the 35-year old veteran Johnny Arcilla in the next round. Encarnacion battles the second-ranked Francis Casey Alcantara today.
