Lapu-Lapu gears up for IEC, trains 200 boy scouts

More than 200 Boy Scouts in Lapu-Lapu City underwent a two-day training on first aid and disaster preparedness that started last Friday at Soong Elementary School in preparation for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress.

Andy Berame, city disaster risk reduction officer, taught the boy scouts on disaster preparedness to be able to respond to any calamity or untoward incident that might occur during the Eucharistic congress in Lapu-Lapu City.

Lapu-Lapu City will host a welcome dinner for the more than 5,000 youth delegates on Jan. 27 and 28.

Audiovisual presentations and demonstrations  on the use of emergency equipment were arranged as part of the training.

Personnel from the Philippine Red Cross Lapu-Lapu-Cordova chapter also conducted first aid training and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a mannequin.

“Although we have a team to handle the disaster risk reduction management, these boy scouts can help in emergency response,” said Berame.

Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Andales encouraged the boy scouts and other youths to learn the basics of risk reduction management to better prepare them for the do’s and don’ts in saving lives.

Andales said schoolchildren are also being taught the proper  response in the event of an earthquake, fire or any calamity occurring especially while in school.
