Organizers cancel Pilgrim Walk due to rains

The Pilgrim Walk on Thursday afternoon has been cancelled because of the intermittent rains.

Instead, the about 5,000 delegates to the two-day Youth Day, which is part of the ongoing 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC), will stay in Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

The delegates were supposed to hold a procession dubbed as “Pilgrim Walk” about 3 p.m. on Thursday from Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu to the open field in Mandani Bay at the reclamation area in Mandaue City where they would stay overnight.

But it had been raining in Cebu since Monday, forcing the organizers to cancel the walk and hold all Youth Day activities in the Hoops Dome, an indoor arena.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza announced the cancellation on Wednesday following her meeting with Father Kit Sestoso, in-charge of the IEC Youth Day.

Sestoso asked the mayor to make additional preparations until Jan. 29.

“Wala man hinoon ta’y problema kon anhi nalang sila dinhi kay we can always provide them this venue, (We don’t have a problem if they stay here because we can always provide them the venue),” said Radaza.

Radaza had yet to check with the City Traffic Management System (CTMS) whether or not to implement the road closure planned during the Pilgrim Walk.

“Road leading to the Hoops Dome will definitely be closed to all vehicular traffic,” she said.

The portable toilets and concessionaires at the Mandani Bay will be brought to Hoops Dome.
