How to stay safe and still have fun while celebrating Sinulog

Sinulog week is here and many of us will be joining religious rituals and revelry. We’ll be dashing around Cebu City, eating on the run, and will often find ourselves amidst large crowds.

Expectedly, aside from our normal routines being disrupted, being around so many people also exposes us to germs that cause colds and flu. Besides, the constant running can help lower our immune systems.

There are steps you can take, however, to both enjoy the festivities and stay healthy. Here are some tips:

Prepare for the weather when you head out the door.
If the forecast says rain: bring an umbrella or a light rain coat. Getting drenched from a sudden downpour can cause sudden change in body temperature that may lead to cough, colds or fever. For a sunny day: wear comfortable clothing like a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers, but pack in an extra top or a tank and cardigan in your bag. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before going out, wear sunglasses and a sun visor.

Eat healthy.
Eating healthy food is the cheapest way to protect you from sickness. Eat Vitamin C-rich foods to boost your immune system to help fight off flu and infection. Watch out for diarrhea, a common disease often caused by eating spoiled or contaminated foods, so always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly to be safe.

Load up on healthy foods and snacks.
Whether you are eating at the parade site or at a restaurant, favor foods that will be filling and nutritious. When you’re on the go, it’s ideal to eat smaller portions more frequently.

Try these snacks:
• Trail mix: Make your own by combining 2 parts nuts with one part dried fruit and put a 1/3 cup serving in a zip-lock bag. Or try one of the new prepackaged options that are already portioned out.
• Tuna sandwich: Tuna, some light mayo, relish, and whole wheat bread (or crackers). Take them in the car on road trips for a filling snack.
• Apples. They do not have to be refrigerated and travel very well.
• Lean beef jerky and juice: This makes for a great sweet and salty combination.

Drink plenty of water.
Staying hydrated is extremely important, especially on the days where you will be outdoors for long periods of time. But make sure it’s clean water you’re drinking. Be cautious of contaminated water sources that could bring water borne diseases such as amoebiasis and cholera. If you’re unsure of the water supply, buy purified drinking water to be safe.

Avoid excessive alcohol.
Always drink in moderation and be mindful to include water or fruit juice. Also, never accept drinks from someone you don’t know and don’t leave your drinks unattended.

Wash your hands.
Keep colds, cough and influenza at bay by regularly washing your hands. It’s the best way to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria. Do it properly by lathering soap between your fingers, under your nails and the top of your hands. Rinse and dry your hands thoroughly to get rid of the germs.

Keep your fitness routine.
Even though you are on the go, don’t take a break from exercise. It will help to keep you energetic and ready for the hectic week ahead.

Take time to rest.
Make sure you still get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation can negatively impact your immune system, affect your metabolic process and lead to fatigue.
