Couple faces child abuse raps

A COUPLE in Cebu City is facing court trial for allegedly using a 15-year-old boy in stealing the bag of another person.

The Cebu City Prosecutors’ Office found sufficient basis to indict Dyna and Rommel Quan on charges of violating Republic Act 10364 or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012, and Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

No bail was recommended.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by policemen who found out that the couple fed and took care of a boy, not their son, who would steal belongings in their behalf.

The boy was arrested by the police after stealing the bag of one Joselito Lardosa along Urgello Street in Barangay Sambag 2, Cebu City on Aug. 11, 2015. The bag contained cash amounting to P150,000.

Police investigators found out that the boy lived with the respondents.

Asked about the bag he stole, the boy allegedly told the police that he threw it  and gave the money to the respondents.

Police went to the house of the respondents to verify the boy’s claim.

Dyna immediately pointed to a sack where the police recovered P112,000 of the amount stolen from Lardosa.

Dyna was then arrested. Her husband Rommel, however, wasn’t around when the hot-pursuit operation was conducted.

Police filed charges against the couple before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office.

They were given the chance to submit their counter-affidavit to refute the allegations but they failed to do so.

Prosecutor Rhoda Bacatan, in her resolution, said the uncontested evidence presented to her is sufficient to indict the respodents.
