CEBU City Councilor Alvin Dizon said he felt he let the urban poor groups down when the City Council failed to override the veto of then-acting Mayor Edgardo Labella on the one-year demolition moratorium ordinance.
After he failed to convince the council to override the veto during this week’s session, Dizon resigned from his post as the council’s chairman of the housing committee as a sign of protest against Labella’s leadership.
“I thought he (Labella) was a pro-poor leader. Now I know he will never make a stand for the underprivileged groups,” said Dizon, who was housing committee chairman for six years.
This was the second time that Dizon’s ordinance was passed and vetoed.
Dizon said he was dismayed by some of his colleagues who vacillated when they tried to override Labella’s veto.
“I have huge respect for them (city councilors), but how come when we tried to override the veto, most of the Team Rama abstained from voting?” he said.
Dizon said that the ordinance was passed four years ago, but there is no development to it until now.
He also called the Rama Administration as Anti-Poor for not passing his moratorium ordinance.
