Sonny to choose ’lesser evil’ gubernatorial bet

Toledo City Mayor John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña is inclined to choose “the lesser of two evils” as far as Cebu’s gubernatorial race is concerned.

At present, he still has not decided whether to support reelectionist Gov. Hilario Davide III of the Liberal Party (LP) or Winston Garcia of One Cebu.

“I wish there had been a third (option). I am torn between Davide who has not done anything and Garcia who is not thinking about Toledo City,” he told Cebu Daily News.

He said he will make a decision “two weeks before election day.”

Osmeña recently told CDN that he was “aggrieved” by Garcia’s lack of vision for Toledo City in his infrastructure plans for Cebu.

According to him, this will affect his decision on whom to support in the polls this year.

What he is sure of, though, is that he supports 101 percent the presidential bid of United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) standard-bearer Vice President Jejomar Binay and the reelection bid of Cebu 3rd District Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia.

He said he also supports One Cebu’s vice-gubernatorial bet Nerissa Soon-Ruiz and Victoria “Tata” Corominas, an independent, in her bid to represent Cebu’s 3rd district in the Provincial Board.

Osmeña said Binay requested him to attend the One Cebu-UNA grand assembly at the Waterfront Hotel last Tuesday, where the two opposition parties signed a coalition agreement for the 2016 elections.

“I am neither UNA nor One Cebu, so I didn’t really need to be there,” said Osmeña.

He said that if it were not for Binay, he wouldn’t have gone to the hotel.

In an interview last Tuesday, Garcia clarified he has plans for Toledo City.

These include the establishment of an international container port and airport in the city, but later found out from Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corp. that Osmeña was the first one to come up with those ideas.

“I shelved it because I didn’t want to be accused of credit-grabbing,” said Garcia.
