Motorist yields ‘cocaine,’ ‘shabu’ at checkpoint

A 40-year-old man was arrested after he was caught possessing packs of suspected cocaine and shabu at a police checkpoint in Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City last Tuesday afternoon.

Rico Igoy, a resident of Sitio Ibabao, Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu, admitted to the police he owned the packs of illegal drugs.

Igoy denied being a drug pusher. He said he bought the illegal drugs in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City for personal consumption.

Police said Igoy tried to avoid a checkpoint at Carmelite New Road.

Igoy, who drove a Honda XRM motorcycle with plate number JA-62975, executed a U-turn but operatives of the City Public Safety Company (CPSC) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team chased and cornered him.

Supt. Rex Lomente said the man acted suspiciously that prompted the police to frisk him.

Police said they seized from the man’s possession four plastic packs containing white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, a sachet of suspected shabu and drug-sniffing paraphernalia.

Lomente said police rarely seize cocaine because of the drug’s steep price.

Lomente said they will submit the seized illegal drugs to the PNP Crime Laboratory to determine its value.
