THICK smoke enveloped the 22nd floor of the Lexmark Plaza 1 Building at the Cebu Business Park, Cebu City after an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) overheated yesterday morning.

Workers were evacuated from the building. No one was injured in the incident but a pregnant worker passed out after she panicked.

SFO3 Daniel Relatado Jr. said the thick smoke resulted in zero visibility in the entire 22nd floor.

Fire fighters also had to use breathing apparatus.

“The only damage was some of the glasses that we decided to break to let out the smoke since we could not see what was really happening,” Relatado said.

Relatado said they found burnt marks in the UPS which was usually turned on 24/7.

He said the UPS was connected to a power source and distributed power supplies to the rest of the computers.

Fire damage was placed at P5,000.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chief of Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CCDRRMC), commended the emergency response team of the Cebu Business Park for its quick action.

“The employees calmly evacuated the building. There were team leaders assigned to guide them for exit; signs were also put up in strategic places for safety. I hope other high-rise building also have this,” said Tumulak.
