Tapales takes on Thai champion on June 17

CEBU-BASED Marlon “Maranding Nightmare” Tapales of RWS Stable of boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud will face reigning WBO bantamweight world champion Pongluang Sor Singyu of Thailand on June 17 in the latter’s turf.

One Singchai, the promotions company that handles Sor Singyu, offered $37,000 to Tapales to make the fight happen, according to a report from Philboxing.com.

Sor Singyu (52-3-0, 35KOs) stunned Filipino boxing fans when he scored a ninth-round technical knockout over ALA Boxing Gym’s AJ Banal at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City in 2012.

He lost the title but got  it back last year when he defeated Japanese Ryo Akaho in Thailand.

The 26-year old Sor Singyu made a successful defense of the title last Feb. 12 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand against Filipino Jetro Pabustan.

The 24-year-old Tapales (28-2-0, 11KO) of Lala, Lanao del Norte earned a shot for the world title showdown when he knocked out Japanese Shohei Omori of Japan in Kyoto last February.

He became the mandatory challenger for Sor Singyu’s title.
