Airport assures power supply

THE management of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) assured passengers that they are ready to deal with brownouts and avoid flight delays as experienced by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Sunday.

The NAIA experienced a five-hour brownout that resulted in the cancellation of 82 domestic flights and delayed 79 international and local flights. About 15,000 passengers were affected by the delays.

MCIA general manager Nigel Paul Villarete said the Mactan Electric Co. (MECO) has always prioritized power for the airport when there is a deficiency in the supply.

In instances when MECO itself is unable to provide the full power requirement of MCIA, Villarete said the airport is equipped with generators both in their substations and in the terminals, which will kick in to augment the supply.

“It will be unlike NAIA 3 which actually stopped operating. So even during brownouts, it will continue to operate,” he said.
