Sawang Calero residents oppose coal plant

WEARING black shirts and black ribbons with the words “NO2COAL,” residents of Barangay Sawang Calero trooped to the Cebu City Council’s regular session yesterday to voice their opposition to a planned coal plant in their area.

Keeshia Salazar, a resident of the area who spoke on behalf of the others, claimed that they were not consulted by Ludo Corp. on the project.

She said the coal plant site is near an elementary school and a small sitio that sells dried fish for a living.

Councilor Nida Cabrera, who heads the council’s environment committee, said the barangay officials told them that a consultation was already done in which 138 residents supported and 91 opposed the project.

Another hearing on the project will be held at the Sawang Calero gym on April 17.
