Wenceslao now in China for April 11 fight vs Kun

Cebu-based Rodel Wenceslao flew to China yesterday for his April 11 bout with Chinese prospect Wang Kun in Xiangzhu province.

The 10-round battle is the first international fight for the top Team Joeric slugger who holds a record of 10 wins, 11 losses and a draw with three knockouts. He was accompanied by trainer Edsel Tuñacao.

Kun, on the other hand, has a pro record of W4-L1, with 3KOs.

Promoter Joeric Calisang told CDN that Wenceslao is in peak form following a three-month training at the Edsel Mike Boxing Gym in Mandaue City.

Last Tuesday, Wenceslao had a three-round sparring with WBO international super-lightweight champion Jason “El Niño” Pagara (37-2, 23KOs) at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds to promote the latter’s April 23 fight at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) in the undercard of the Nonito Donaire-Zsolt Bedak world title duel.

According to Calisang, they initially prohibited Wenceslao from further sparring sessions but the latter insisted on sparring with Pagara to ensure that he be ably prepared for Kun.

“He sparred more than a hundred rounds already. I’m worried because he might overwork himself but he told me that it’s ok because he is in top condition,” said Calisang, the founder of Joeric Boxing Team.

Wenceslao has also sparred with Randy “Kumong Bato” Suico (31-10-1, 26KOs) a former world title challenger and former OPBF super-lightweight champion.

“It’s now or never for Rodel. We all know that China is a booming country when it comes to boxing so a victory will definitely put his name on the elite list. I wish him all the best and I am confident that he can do it because I’ve seen his hunger to win,” added Calisang.

Wenceslao snatched the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super-lightweight title from Weng Haya via majority decision in Danao City last year.
