DepEd backs proposed P10K aid for teachers

THE Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Division expressed support for a proposed city ordinance that will give P10,000 annual assistance to primary and secondary public school teachers.

In a public hearing during the session of the Cebu City Council last Wednesday, Danilo Gudelosao, the assistant superintendent of the Cebu City Schools Division, said “this (ordinance) is again a very good initiative from the city government through this august body to really look after the welfare of our teachers.”

In the hearing, Gudelosao suggested to change the clause from “primary and secondary public schoolteachers” to “all DepEd public school teachers” since there is a variety of teaching positions in the Department of Education.

If changed, the ordinance would include teachers in kindergarten, ALS (alternative learning system) Mobile, Special Education, Madrasah and Abot-Alam programs.

Gudelosao agreed to the city council’s suggestion that the same cash assistance will be given to all the DepEd personnel regardless of their position.

The proposed ordinance, entitled “Cash Bonus Ordinance to all Primary and Secondary Public School Teachers Every Year in the City of Cebu and Providing Funds Thereof,” aims to institutionalize the cash assistance given to public school teachers in the city every year.

In 2012 and 2015, public school teachers received P10,000 incentives at the end of the year.

The council agreed to Councilor  Gerardo Carillo’s suggestion to change the term “bonus” to “cash assistance.”

Carillo noted that bonus refers to money given to an employee to reward  good performance. /USJ-R INTERN MICHAELA JAYCEL L. DOLORES
