BACK WITH UV

Former Baby Lancer now making waves as a Green Lancer

Two years removed from leading the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers to the Cesafi juniors division finals, former Mythical Five guard JC Escalona has found himself donning the familiar hues of green and white once again, albeit this time with the seniors team.

The athletic 5-foot-7 Escalona was out of the basketball scene for two years as he had to tend to his academic obligations.

In his return to the seniors team, he wasted no time making his mark as he played a key role in stopping the reigning Cesafi champions University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 72-68, in their opening match in the Ormoc City Chamber of Commerce Inc. Invitational Basketball Tournament on Monday night at the Ormoc Superdome.

With star guard Jun Manzo in sick bay with an eye injury, Escalona took on a familiar role as court general to help the Green Lancers overcome a USC squad which had Cesafi MVP Shooster Olago and Congolese import Espoir Toyambi in harness.

UV head coach Gary Cortes had nothing but praise for Escalona, who joined the Green Lancers just recently.

“So far he’s doing well sa team even though he just joined practices a few days before we departed for Ormoc. He has immediately adjusted to his new teammates both on and off the floor,” said Cortes in an exclusive talk with Cebu Daily News.

On a backcourt where maturity is at a premium for Cortes, Escalona has immediately found his place alongside the aforementioned Manzo and another rookie, Sheldon Gahi.

“We’ll be able to use him since he’s mature beyond his years,” Cortes added.

Escalona was elated with the opportunity to showcase his skills at the next level.

The spunky guard added that he is still adjusting to the nuances of the collegiate game, especially with regards to the physicality.
