Carcar cops still trying to identify mall robbers

POLICE are still trying to identify and catch the robbers involved in Saturday’s heist of a jewelry store inside the Super Metro in Carcar City, which ended with the robbers shooting two security guards and escaping with the loot on motorcycles.

Senior Supt. Clifford Gairanod, director of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO), said they were able to secure still images of the estimated eight to 10 robbers after reviewing the mall’s security cameras.

Gairanod said the images of the robbers were sent to other regional units for possible identification.

“We are verifying reports that the armed robbery group is not from here as some witnesses claimed that they are not fluent in Cebuano language. It might be possible that they have a local contact here,” said Supt. Brindo Nacario, acting Carcar City police chief.

Nacario also said the wounded guards, Crisanto Martinez and Antonio Fuentes, were in stable condition following an operation last Saturday night.

They were recuperating in a private hospital in Cebu City as of yesterday.

“There were two guards in the front, one assigned for the incoming customers and another for the ones coming out,” Nacario said.

Nacario said the robbers overpowered the guard on the exit side, but shot the other one at the entrance.

Then they proceeded to the jewelry store where they shot the guard there.

Nacario said a roving security guard shot at the fleeing robbers as they left the jewelry store but his gun jammed after firing three shots.
