NINE squads will contend for the championship in the 2016 Casals Village Summer Basketball League, which gets underway today at the Casals gym in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.
Ushering in the tournament is the 1 p.m. opening ceremony to be graced by US-based Cebuano NBA trainer/coach Jefferson Codera, Jr.
Codera is a member of the reigning NBA champions Golden State Warriors’ training camp and a licensed coach of USA Basketball under its Youth Development Program.
Also gracing the affair are the officers of the Casals Village Homeowners Association, which is spearheading the event in partnership with San Remigio Properties.
Drawing of lots will determine the pairing for the three opening matches.
Contending teams for the month-long tournament are San Remigio Properties, Dexlab Disciple, ASPA, Prycegas, Casals Village Power House, SG Arq Builders, Energen, Atene de Cebu Blue Eagles, and Gaisano Capital.
The tournament will follow a single round robin format in the elimination round with the top four seeds moving to the crossover semifinals.
The top two qualifiers will be twice-to-beat against their lower-ranked foes. Semifinal winners will battle in a do-or-die championship match.
Champion will receive P15,000, while the second and third finishers will get P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.
