Two dead, three injured in SUV, cargo truck collision

TWO persons died while three others were injured in a collision between a sports utility vehicle and cargo truck along the national road of barangay Minolos, Barili town last Friday morning.

PO2 Jotimar Tijano of the Barili police precinct identified the fatality as Sarah Luz Gutierrez, a resident of barangay Tayod in Liloan town. She died on arrival at the Barili district hospital.

Another victim identified as Dorothy Cantilla of barangay Canduman, Mandaue City died at a Cebu City hospital.

Those injured were 17-year-old Hermeta Agustin of barangay Lawaan in Danao City, 18-year-old Mary Joy Mariquit of barangay San Vicente, Liloan town and 17-year-old Francis Mantuhar of Liloan town.

Tijano said the victims were headed to a Badian town beach resort on board an SUV driven by Froilan Avilla Gutierrez of barangay Tayod, Liloan town when the incident occured.

On passing through a blind curve, Gutierrez reportedly encroached on the opposite lane to overtake another vehicle, but was unable to spot the cargo truck driven by Jessie Dacula of Misamis Oriental that resulted to the collision.

The victims were brought by residents and police to the nearby hospitals. Both drivers were unhurt by the incident.

A settlement was reportedly reached between Dacula, who was headed to Cebu City at the time and the relatives of the victims.
