AROUND 100 fishermen from Mandaue City participated in the third annual inter-barangay boat race held last Sunday at the Bridge Park as part of the fiesta activities of the city.
Barangay Looc grabbed the most number of awards among the other coastal barangays in the city.
The race that started at 8 a.m. was spearheaded by the Mandaue City Sports Commission, in coordination with the City Agriculture Office.
The first event was a single boat race participated by four barangays. Barangay Looc won first place with P3,000 cash prize, followed by Labogon which pocketed P2,000 and third placer Paknaan which took home P1,000.
The second event was a boat race for couples. Barangay Looc grabbed first place with P3,000 cash prize.
There was also a swimming competition for individuals that was won by Barangay Paknaan.
City agriculturist Rolando Tiro said in his opening remarks that the city government is also looking at the fisherfolk sector and provided them opportunity to take part and enjoy the celebration of Mandaue’s festivities.
Nic-Nic Toledo, the champion in the single boat race from Barangay Looc, said, “Kanunay ming nagpaabot matag tuig aning lumba sa baroto para kalingawan sa mga mangingisda (We always wait for this boat race each year for the fishermen to enjoy).”
