Following the massive success of the Summer Grassroots Training Program (SGTP) conducted by the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) that discovered 7,000 new athletes, the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) is hoping to do just that as it hosts the Cebu Provincial Summer Games 2016 which will fire off on May 20-22 in Balamban.
The competition which is open for kids 15-years old and under hopes to discover potential talents who will represent the province in regional and national tournaments.
It will also look for potential runners who will have a chance to compete
in the Anniversary Run this August 2016.
The CPSC will utilize the expertise of around 2,000 teacher-coaches who underwent training for almost a year now to guide the kids in their respective sports.
Events that will be participated by the young athletes include basketball, volleyball, athletics, arnis, boxing, futsal, chess, sepak takraw, taekwondo, baseball, softball and tennis.
BASEBALL
The search for the province’s top baseball players kicked off in the Summer Games 2016 last April 22-23 in Balamban and Tuburan, respectively.
The six-team competition was divided into two categories with Balamban, Minglanilla and the City of Naga in group A while group B has Tuburan, Sogod and Carmen.
Minglanilla and Tuburan, which topped the elimination round with identical 2-0 (win-loss) records, will battle for the gold on May 15 at the Cebu Technological University grounds (CTU) in Tuburan, Cebu.
Tuburan displayed its might in the penultimate round, as it blanked Balamban, 10-0 while Minglanilla survived a nail-biter against Sogod, 9-6 to claim a spot in the finals.
Sogod and Balamban hope to salvage their season as they battle for third place next Sunday.
