Reigning champions White Sand remained sharp and defeated Southwestern University (SWU), 21-14, 21-15, to once again bag the Rider Beach Volleyball Tournament title yesterday at the Green Lagoon Park in Compostela town, northern Cebu.
The White Sand tandem of Apple Saraum and Jusabelle Brillo did not show any signs of rust as they put the pedal to metal in winning the opening set and continued their dominance en route to the straight-set victory.
“Masaya po kasi hindi kami nagsasamang dalawa sa mga laro kasi nga may trabaho na siya (Brillo) at ako may trabaho na din,” Saraum, a former star of the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, said. (I am happy because we don’t play that much together because she has work and I have work too.)
Despite the lopsided scores, the Lady Cobras actually had some promising moments, at one point pulling to within 8-9 in the second set. But the duo of former Philippine Team players proved too much to handle for the young guns of SWU.
Despite that, the veterans had all praises for the SWU duo.
“Malakas ang Southwestern. May potential ang bawat isa sa kanila lalong lalo na si (Janelle) Cabahug,” Saraum added. (SWU is strong. Both of them have a lot of potential, especially Cabahug.)
Meanwhile, Cebuana Isabel Molde, the reigning UAAP women’s volleyball Rookie of the Year, led University of the Philippines to a third place finish with a 21-17, 21-18 victory against the Tejero Volleyball Club.
