Cebuanos are advised to bring along their umbrellas and rainwear this week as the weather bureau has predicted more thunderstorms and rain showers in the coming days because of the ongoing wind transition from the northeast monsoon to the southwest monsoon.

Romeo Aguirre, weather specialist from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan, said rain showers would happen in the afternoon onward to the evening.

Rain poured from 11 p.m. to midnight last Saturday. The weather bureau said it dumped 15 millimeters of rain in Metro Cebu.

This month, the weather bureau has already recorded 46.6 millimeters of rain from five days of rain in Cebu.

“It’s not yet rainy season. There are factors (that have to occur) before we declare rainy season, and that includes that winds prevailing must be from the southwest,” Aguirre told Cebu Daily News.

The weather bureau also said that winds coming from the southwest has been experienced for a week.

Another factor is the occurrence of rainfall and thunderstorms at climate one areas, which include Laoag, Dagupan, Mindoro, Vigan and Metro Manila, all located in the western coast.

The third factor is the reduction of the high pressure area in the northern Pacific and the development of a low pressure area in southern and eastern China.

Pagasa has also been issuing thunderstorm advisories this month.

These included last Saturday’s 11:36 p.m. thunderstorm advisory for Cebu City, Compostela and Danao City, where it rained at that time until midnight.
