The Worthy-University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers secured the early lead in the standings after scoring a 71-57 rout of the hapless Tyrone Properties-University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. Partner’s Cup yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Worthy-UV used a huge run in the third to pull away from Tyron Properties-USPF then finished the game with a 14-7 run in the final period to give the Green Lancers a 2-0 (win-loss) record in the standings.
Rey Suerte was the top-scorer for the Green Lancers with 13 markers while Josue Segumpan and Jerome Napao added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Lyndon Colina had a whopping 33 points for the losing squad but it still failed to save the Panthers from absorbing their second straight loss in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Phinma-Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras kicked off their campaign on a high note as they defeated the Mighty Sports-University of San Jose -Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 71-68, via come-from-behind fashion.
It seemed like the Jaguars were on their way to their second straight victory after taking a 59-48 advantage at the end of the third.
But two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) Mark Jayven Tallo took matters into his own hands as he hit back-to-back three-point shots and dished out several assists to help SWU take a 69-68 lead.
USJ-R had one last crack at the basket but Jaybee Mantilla’s three hit nothing but air as SWU grabbed its first win of the season.
Jovanne Luz led the Cobras with 17 markers while Tallo added 15.
