Pull out your umbrellas because it will be a rainy Monday in Cebu, according to the weather bureau.

Alfredo Quiblat, chief for Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) based on Mactan Island, Cebu, said there would be light to moderate rains due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ),

“To those who are in outdoors today should have their umbrellas and coats,” he said,

The ITCZ occurs when the winds from southeast  and northeast meets at Pacific Ocean, creating clouds that produce rain.

Quiblat said the ITCZ is also a sign that it is the onset of the rainy season.

The ITCZ also brings thunderstorm and lightning.

Thunder and lightning produced by cumulonimbus or heavy clouds. When lightning strikes, it has a vertical extent of nine kilometers.

If thunder and lightning are experienced, Quilbat advised those outside to stay near buildings or houses.

Everything that is “pointed” is risky to lightning.  It is also not advisable to stay under the trees.

It is also advisable to stay away from the water since water is a conductor electricity.

Quiblat said that forecast of La Niña occurence is now at 75 percent which means it will start earlier in second half of the year.
