THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is undertaking a P200-million drainage and dredging projects aimed at alleviating the flooding problem in Mandaue City.
However, these will be completed only in August at most, when the country would already be well into the rainy season, said project engineer Myrna de la Cerna of the DPWH 6th Engineering District.
Hopefully, these projects would be completed before the onset of the La Niña phenomenon, which would bring heavy rains and could cause massive flooding.
One project is a P50-million drainage and road concreting project along Jayme St. in Barangay Paknaan.
Others are P49-million dredging project at the mouth of the Butuanon River, P26-million dredging and slope protection concreting of Tipolo canal, P20-million road concreting and drainage of C.D. Seno street in Barangay Tipolo, and P18-million slope protection concreting of Consuelo creek in Sitio Alliance in Barangay Basak.
Smaller projects include the P2-million concreting and drainage project in Sudlon Maguikay, P2-million drainage project in Barangay Guizo, P2-million drainage project in Cabancalan and P3.8-million slope protection concreting of Mahiga creek in Barangay Subangdaku.
Andres Suson, officer-in-charge of Mandaue’s City Engineering Office, urged Mandaue residents to do their part by disposing of garbage properly, unclogging the drainage and cleaning the waterways.
The city government also urged barangay officials to spearhead the clean-up campaign in their areas.
