ANS Team A nips USC to secure Cebu Youth Volley crown

AFTER faltering in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League (SGVL) – Central Visayas Leg, the Abellana National School (ANS)-Team A made sure that no breakdown would happen again as it held its ground against the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and won, 25-7, 21-25, 25-19, to walk away with the Cebu Youth Volleyball League (CYVL) championship title yesterday in front of a packed crowd at the Lux Oriens Gym of the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

ANS, which finished fourth in the SGVL last week, caught fire early and capitalized on the sloppy plays and miscues of its opponents to seize a 15-4 lead.

The Warriors looked puzzled in the early stages of the game and were unable to find their rhythm after committing back-to-back service errors which gave ANS the opening set easily.

But USC did not give up without a fight as they took the second set and even tied the game at 15-all in the third. But that was the last hurrah for the Warriors as ANS relied on the efforts of Johannah Bejec to finish off their opponents.

Bejec was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while teammate Hannah Cabansay bagged the Best Attacker award.

Other special awardees were USC’s Maxine Sator and Beyoncé Yu, who won the Best Setter and Best Receiver plums, respectively, while SHS-AdC’s Samantha Tatad and Alyanna Nocom pocketed the Best Server and Blocker tiaras.

Meanwhile, the SHS-AdC Training Pool squad beat ANS Team B, 25-19, 18-25, 25-15, to settle for third place.
