A DUMP truck loaded with washed sand was seized by personnel of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) in Barangay Prenza, Balamban town at 6 p.m. last Saturday.
Acting Penro chief Baltazar Tribunalo Jr. said the truck owner identified as Alvin Calvo of Barangay Matab-ang in Toledo City and the driver identified as Jorge Fernandez of Minglanilla town had no delivery permit for the 10 cubic meters of washed sand.
They also had no cover for the truck. “It’s also better if barangay tanods themselves and those in the local government units will also help in enforcing the law,” Tribunalo said.
Both Calvo and Fernandez were found to have violated Provincial Ordinance No. 2008-10 or the Revenue Code of Cebu and will be fined P10,000 each for the violation.
The truck is impounded at the barangay hall of Barangay Prenza.
Tribunalo said the fines will be divided to 30 percent for the barangay, 30 percent for the town and city and 60 percent for the province.
“Quarrying is extracting and can’t be replenished. It’s destructive if it can’t be regulated,” Tribunalo said.
Tribunalo said there is a need to revisit the province’s major rivers and look into permits that have been issued to operators.
