CEBU CITY–One person was killed while his friend was wounded in a vehicular accident around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday along the national highway of Inuburan, Naga City, southern Cebu.
Police identified the fatality as Mario Panuncial from Barangay Pitalo, San Fernando Cebu.
He was proclaimed dead on arrival at the Minglanilla District Hospital because of severe head injuries, according to traffic investigator, PO3 Menandro Boligor.
His friend Nicasio Malinao, 24, also from Barangay Pitalo and driver of the Yamaha motorcycle, was confined at the South General Hospital in Naga City for treatment of multiple body injuries.
Police investigation showed the victims were on board a single motorcycle heading to Naga City from San Fernando town.
Upon reaching Barangay Inuburan, Malinao attempted to overtake another motorcycle.
He, however, failed to do so and instead applied the brake. As a result, Pununcial, who was Malinao’s passenger, was thrown off the motorcycle and landed on the bumper of Nissan Navara, which was coming from opposite direction, as the motorcycle crashed on the road.
Except for the minor damage of the Nissan Navara, its driver Kirk Cabriana, a resident of Barangay Lagtang in Talisay, and other passengers, were not hurt. The Nissan Navara was from Naga to San Fernando.
Cabriana was detained at the Naga City police station pending the filing of charges against him, possible reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury, Boligor said.
