Jason Canoy of the Omega Boxing Gym labored hard before pulling off a victory he sorely needed as he forced a unanimous win over Jestoni Autida on Saturday night in the main event of the well-attended ‘Uptown Rumble’ at the parking lot of One Mango Avenue in Cebu City.

The two fighters, who came into the match looking to recover from separate losses abroad, figured in a bloody, 10-round action-packed encounter that saw Canoy landing some big shots and Autida displaying his accurate counter attacks.

In the end, Canoy escaped with his 25th win with Judges Edwin Barrientos, Edgar Olalo and Teddy Alivio all scoring the bout for Canoy.

Barrientos scored the fight at 96-94, Olalo saw it at 96-93, while Alivio had it 98-91, a score that was heavily protested by Autida’s camp led by former world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa.

Canoy, who has six losses, two draws with 18 knockout victories, vowed to put on a show against Autida of the Peñalosa Stable after losing to debuting Japanese fighter Hinata Maruta in November last year in Osaka, Japan.

For a while, it looked like Canoy was on his way to pulling off an easy win when he floored Autida with a well-timed right uppercut in the third round.

Though groggy and bothered by a cut above his right eye, Autida didn’t give up, weathering the storm and nearly turned the tide in his favor when he rocked Canoy several times with solid shots in the succeeding rounds.

Autida had his moments late in the fight when Canoy went into the fifth round with two cuts—one at the right eyebrow and another at the side of the same eye.

Canoy said failing to finish off Autida just showed there’s more work cut out for him.

“I need to work on a lot of things especially my stamina. I slowed down late in the fight, and it could be blamed to the more than six months of layoff,” said Canoy, who dealt Autida his fifth defeat in 15 fights.

“It didn’t surprise me when he remained standing after I dropped him in the fight. He is a well-trained and experienced boxer; he’s tough,” added Canoy.

In the main undercard of the boxing extravaganza promoted by Omega Pro Sports International, Jerry Castroverde (9W-2L-0D, 5KO) scored a first round knockout win over Hagibis Quiñones (5-18-1, 4KO) of General Santos City.

In other fights, Jared Payao (13W-2L, 4KOs) won over Jay-r Salvador of Pagadian City (5W-28L-3D); Ryan Quimbo (4W-12L-1D) defeated Kim Jae Ho (6W-2L-2D-2KOs); Salatiel Amit (8W-1L-2D-5KOs) scored a sixth-round TKO win over Junriel Jimenez (5W-1L-0D); Jay-R Aliasot (3W-1L-0D-2KOs) nailed a first-round TKO win over Holly Quiñones (1W-6L-1D); Ponciano Rimandiman (3W-4L-1D-2KOs) pocketed a second-round TKO victory over debuting Junjie Bautista; Ian Rafuela (2W-0L-0D) scored a majority decision over Ar-ar Borbon (2W-1L-1D-2KOs) and the debuting Oliver Genecera chalked up a second-round knockout win over fellow debuting fighter Jonard Tabar.
