SPO1 Adonis Dumpit is officially back in the police service.

Donning a complete police uniform, the controversial policeman reported to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 yesterday to process some requirements for him to be given a new assignment.

The Philippine National Police has lifted his leave of absence without pay — a status he got when he was imprisoned for six years for shooting dead a 17-year-old suspected robber in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City in 2004.

“Start nako karon pagkapulis. Naka-uniform na. Pero kon mapriso kog usab, aw di na sab ko mag-uniform (I’m resuming my police duties. That’s why I’m wearing my uniform. But if I’ll be imprisoned again, then I’ll have to remove this uniform),” Dumpit told reporters.

“Tagbaw gani ko’g hiyak ani. Dako naman ko’g tiyan (I’m holding in my gut because I have a big belly already),” he quipped.

Asked which unit he preferred to be assigned, Dumpit said he wanted his superiors to put him in the Firearms Explosives Security Agencies and Guard Supervisory Section (FESAGGS), his last assignment before he was detained.

He also welcomed the possibility of being assigned to secure Cebu City Mayor-elect Tomas Osmeña for whom he served as bodyguard years ago.

At age 53, Dumpit doesn’t want to be assigned to a police unit that conducts operations, saying it should be given to younger policemen so they can prove themselves.

“Ihatag ko na sa mga bag-o, uy. Tulo na lang ka tuig, mo-retire nako. Basin unya sa Abuyog (Leyte Regional Prisons) na pud ko motugpa ani (I’ll rather let young policemen conduct the operations. I’ll retire after three years. I don’t want to return to the Abuyog jail),” he said.

The soft-spoken policeman recently visited his 83-year-old mother Liwayway in Davao Oriental to wish her well.

“Nihilak to si mama. Niuli ra ko kay basin dili na nako siya makita. Tan-aw nako sa akong mama, dili na sad siya magdugay (Mama cried when she saw me. I visited her because that might be the last time we see each other. I think she won’t live long due to her age),” he said.

Dumpit, a sharpshooter and multi-awarded policeman, was released from the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog town, Leyte last month after the Court of Appeals allowed him to post P250,000 in bail pending resolution of his appeal because he had served his minimum prison term of six years and exhibited good behavior during his incarceration.

Dumpit was convicted of homicide by the Regional Trial Court in Cebu City for killing a 17-year-old suspected robber. The administrative case filed against him in relation to the case was, however, dismissed by the National Police Commission, allowing him to return to the police service.
