The couple who lost a son at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) asked the Cebu City police to investigate the doctors and staff that they blamed for his death.

Edalene Añosa and husband Roldan told the Women’s Desk of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) that she was told by the staff to undergo normal delivery despite being advised by a doctor to give birth via caesarean section.

She said the infant’s head got stuck during labor and medical staff tried to forcibly pull the baby out several times.

When the baby came out, he was immediately brought to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but died hours after.

Photos of the baby showed dark patches which appeared to be bruises on his skin.

“Nangayo mi og hustisya (We ask for justice),” said Edalene who was still limping when she went to the CCPO yesterday morning.

Senior Insp. Arieza Otida, chief of the Women and Children Protection Center, said they will ask the hospital to provide them with the names of those who handled the delivery of Edalene’s son.

“We have to find out what really happened. We will do everything we can. I really pity the baby,” she told reporters.

If they find probable cause, Otida said they will file appropriate charges in court.

The boy’s father Roldan, a construction worker in Lapu-Lapu City, complained over how they were treated at VSMMC.

“If you don’t have money, they won’t treat you well. I hope this won’t happen to other people,” he said.

While waiting for the delivery of their baby, Roldan said he was just told by a hospital staff not to worry.

But after a while, he was told by the medical staff to go to the nursery.

When he went inside the room, Roldan said he was asked to help them revive his son.

Edalene said ultrasound tests showed she had a breech baby.

Before she gave birth, she said a doctor at VSMMC convinced her to undergo ligation which means she could no longer bear a child.

Edalene said she agreed to undergo caesarean section but declined to have ligation.

She said the doctor told her it’s not easy to bear many children.

Edalene had given birth four times and lost three of them.

Edalene said she’s praying that God will help them find justice./With UP Cebu Intern Dafne N. Wenceslao
