THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas (UV) and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu claimed a title each at the close of the Cebu Youth Basketball League Summer League 2016 on Saturday afternoon at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue.
UV first won the under-12 title with a resounding 45-34 victory over Ateneo de Cebu but the latter paid the former back by capturing the under-15 championship with a thrilling 49-48 win.
John Aguilar made Ateneo de Cebu’s victory possible as he sank the go-ahead bucket with seven seconds left that eventually gave his team the title.
It was a neck-and-neck affair, which Ateneo de Cebu made possible in spite of playing with just four players in the second canto.
UV led at the onset of the fourth, 42-39, after a three-pointer by Joshua Canoy but Ateneo de Cebu responded by scoring eight straight points capped by a Mark Dumandan floater that put them ahead, 47-42, time down to two minutes.
The Baby Lancers were not yet done as they rattled off six unanswered points, highlighted by a basket by Osias Padilla that allowed UV to retake the lead, 48-47, with 13 seconds remaining.
But UV’s celebration was short-lived as Ateneo de Cebu came out of a timeout and found John Aguilar underneath the rim and scored the go-ahead basket.
Steve Enriquez then missed for UV as time expired to give the title to the boys in blue.
In the under-12 final, Mike Monton led the way for UV with 11 while Franco Gabunada and San Salarza added seven apiece.
