Games today

Bayugan City
4 p.m.- FEU vs. USJ-R
6 p.m.- Holy Trinity College vs. UV

Two Cebu-based teams look to make a masterly impact when the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars face separate opponents at the start of the 2016 Mayor Kim Lope A. Asis Invitational Basketball Tournament today at the Lope Asis memorial gynasium in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur.

The Jaguars will battle the reigning UAAP champions Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws in the first game at 4 p.m., while the Green Lancers take on General Santos City’s Holy Trinity College in the 6 p.m. main match.

A whopping P200,000 top purse is at stake in the four-day tournament that will also feature NCAA powerhouse San Beda Red Lions.

Although San Beda will be parading its Team B, the squad should not be taken lightly as it will include some members of the Gilas Cadet led by Cebuano player JB Bahio, a former University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panther.

The tournament offers P150,000 to the first runner-up, while third to fifth placers will get P100,000, P75,000 and P50,000, respectively.

“The league is expected to draw thousands of sports enthusiasts as this is the highlight of our 9th Charter Day and Bayug Festival celebration. The objective of this investment is not purely for the purpose of entertainment but, this heavily funded league is also to promote my city and to send a strong message to everybody that Mindanao is a peaceful place,” said Bayugan City Mayor Kim Lope A. Asis in a statement.

Tournament format states that a single round robin will be followed in the elimination round. The top two teams after the eliminations will battle in a sudden-death match for the championship trophy.
