Two low pressure areas to bring rains in Cebu, Visayas — Pagasa

THE public is advised to bring umbrellas and rainwear in the next few days after the weather bureau’s forecast of light to moderate rains in the Visayas starting Saturday until Wednesday.

Alfredo Quiblat, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) in Mactan, said the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has spawned two low pressure areas (LPAs) that will affect Cebu and the rest of Visayas.

“Rains will be anytime of the day,” he told Cebu Daily News.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, two LPAs were spotted 850 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, and 160 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

“The ITCZ is a breeding ground. It has series of weak LPAs,” he said.

Quiblat said the LPA located 850 kilometers east of Surigao City may develop into a tropical depression.

Quiblat advised the public to be vigilant as floods and landslides may happen.

Aside from rains, he also said that lightning and thunder may also be experienced during these rains.

He advised the public to stay indoors, and, for those outside, to stay near buildings and houses when rains with thunder and lightning occur.

He also warned that anything with a “pointed” end is dangerous during lightning phenomena.

The public is also waned not to stay under trees when thunder and lightning occur.

He also advised the public to stay away from bodies of water like rivers, pools and the sea during lightning occurrences because water is also a “conductor” of electricity.
