GMR-MEGAWIDE Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), the private operator and manager of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) announced that the country’s first automated boarding pass validation system, or Veripax, is now fully operational since June 1.

GMCAC tapped US-based technology firm Rockwell Collins in implementing ARINC VeriPax on Gunnebo Security Group automated gates to help streamline the security check process, improve passenger experience and boost security at the airport.

GMCAC also tapped Rockwell Collins for the implementation of other airport solutions including the flight information display system, airport operational database system, and baggage messaging server.

“We understand that tourism is one of the major drivers of the Philippines’ economy, thus we want to ensure that our travelers have a positive experience when they are at the airport,” said GMCAC Chief Executive Adviser Andrew Harrison.

The Rockwell Collins ARINC VeriPax™ passenger management system instantaneously verifies or denies clearance using real-time data, strengthening security, reducing queues, and giving passengers more free time in the terminal. ARINC VeriPax automates screening using 2D boarding pass scanners as well as self-service biometric technology.

At present, MCIA has four Veripax machines available at the Final Security Check for all domestic and international passengers.

Upon entering the Final Security Check, passengers are advised to ready their boarding passes for scanning. The system is able to read both printed boarding passes and electronic boarding passes on mobile phones or tablets. The printed boarding passes should face down on the scanner. For those using the electronic boarding pass, place the pass facing down on the scanner and collect the printed pass upon entry.

The following passengers are still advised to use the assisted scanning lane: passengers in wheelchairs, passengers with strollers, and passengers with small children.

In another development, GMCAC also announced that the International Arrivals Area, particularly the Passport Control area at the existing terminal has been expanded to 2,355 square meters, an additional 413 square meters from 1,942 square meters previously.
The additional space can comfortably accommodate 413 passengers.

“In close to two years, the existing terminal has undergone many changes, which have greatly improved the experience of our passengers. Through this, tourism, business and leisure travel will increase significantly and contribute to the economic prosperity of Cebu,” said Louie Ferrer, GMCAC President. /PR
