Cebu City eyes revival of rehab center project in Labangon

With a huge turnout of the Oplan TokHang (Toktok-Hangyu) that encourage hundreds of drug users to surrender to the authorities, the Cebu City government is looking to revive the Rehab Center Project that was planned to be built in Barangay Labangon intended for indigent drug dependents in the city.

This after Cebu City South District Representative Rodrigo Abellanosa asked the Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH 7) to resume the construction of the rehab center which was started in 2014.

“It was already planned but it was stopped by the previous administration (former Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama) for flimsy reasons,” Abellanosa said.

According to Abellanosa, the rehab center was one of his projects back in 2014 that he asked DPWH to fund and for the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to operate.

He said he asked then DSWD secretary Dinky Soliman to operate the rehab center.

He said that the project is worth P8 million and was intended for only 25 persons at a time.

“After hundreds of drug dependents have surfaced in the city, the very limited facility of the City Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP) can only accomodate so much. We need much a bigger facility,” he said.

He also said that he supports the idea of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to put up a bigger rehabilitation community for the hundreds of drug dependents in the city in the future.
