More than 1K to register on last day for SK, brgy polls

LONGER lines await registrants at the Commission on Election (Comelec) Cebu City office as voter registration for the October barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections ends today, July 30.

Comelec Cebu City officer Megumi Tapia said they expect more than 1,000 registrants today.

“Most likely, there will be students who missed the registration the whole week because of classes,” Tapia said.

Tapia said they will work around the clock to accommodate the last-minute registrants.

Volunteers will assist those with special needs like senior citizens, pregnant women and persons with disabilities.

Registrants are advised to bring pens, fans and food. Jennifer Dapiton, a 15-year old high school student of Pardo Night High School, had to wait for two hours in line before she was accommodated.

“I want to vote for the SK Elections because I do not want the youth to be involved in illegal activities such as drugs,” Jennifer told Cebu Daily News.

About 20,969 were already registered for the barangay and SK Elections in Cebu City since the registration opened last July 15.

Of that number, 11, 357 were from the south district and 9,612 were from the north district.

Tapia said there were still no directives from the Comelec central office in Manila on whether or not they can extend the voters’ registration.
